28 · Production
Right at the printer, first time.
Almost everything we produce is printed in four-colour CMYK, and it reaches bottlers and vendors. A wrong colour build or a low-resolution file costs a reprint. These are the production rules for every file that leaves the building.
28.1
The file rules.
- Colour
- CMYK for print. Our own elements are K only (C0 M0 Y0). Customer colours use the builds in the customer's own standards
- Black type
- K100, overprint. Never rich black for type
- Resolution
- 300 dpi at final printed size
- Large format
- 150 dpi at final size is acceptable for pieces viewed from a distance
- Check
- Effective resolution = pixel width ÷ printed width in inches. An 8 × 10 in image at 300 dpi printed at 40 × 50 in is 60 dpi, too low
- Bleed
- 0.125 in on every edge that prints to the trim
- Fonts
- Outlined or embedded. Logos are always placed from the outlined master
- PDF/X-4, with crop marks and bleed
- File name
- S-code_Program_Piece_Rev.pdf

28.2
Proofs.
- Check the artwork against the checklist before it goes to the vendor.
- Check the vendor's proof against the approved artwork, not against memory.
- Hard proof any new colour, material or large run before production.
- Approve the first article with three signatures before the run ships.
The schematic texture's opacity and the logo minimum sizes are still to be confirmed on real proofs.
